Important Information Before Applying for a Work Permit

A Work Permit is issued by the Director of Immigration Services under Section 40 of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act, 2011. It allows foreign nationals to enter Kenya for employment, business, missionary work, or residence.

Permits are granted based on recommendations from the Permit Determination Committee, appointed by the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Interior. Appeals against permit decisions can be made to the Cabinet Secretary under Section 22(1) of the Kenya Citizens and Foreign Nationals Management Service Act, 2011.

Permit Classes:

  • Class A – Prospecting & Mining

  • Class B – Agriculture & Animal Husbandry

  • Class C – Prescribed Professions

  • Class D – Employment (where skills are not locally available)

  • Class F – Specific Manufacturing

  • Class G – Specific Trade, Business or Consultancy

  • Class I – Religious or Charitable Activities

  • Class K – Ordinary Residents (aged 35+ with assured income)

  • Class M – Refugees (and their spouses)

Exemption:
Granted by the Cabinet Secretary to individuals or groups through a Gazette notice under Section 34(3)(g) of the Act.
